Derek Templeman had been asleep in his home in Macaulay Drive, St Giles, Lincoln, when he woke to find Heffernan standing over him with a dictaphone and a crowbar.
He told him “Speak into that or I’ll hit you” before attacking Mr Templeman with the crowbar. His other housemate Ian Dove suffered a similar fate, Lincoln Crown Court was told.
